7 Seas Med is developing the first wind farm in the Mediterranean

The 7 Seas Med project Received VIA decree on 21 March 2024.

The 7 Seas Med floating wind turbine development is a Divento partnership.

7 Seas Med has been the first to receive VIA Decree and pioneered the Italian offshore floating wind industry.

7 Seas Med Location

Location

  • The project is located approximately 35 km from the coast in the Strait of Sicily.

  • Landfall and connection to the National Electricity Transmission Network is planned near Marsala (see map).

Schedule

  • The project has achieved VIA Decree and was the first Floating wind project in Italy to do so.

  • Construction is planned in 2028.

Size

  • The project will have a capacity of approximately 250 MW, enough to power 300,000 homes.

  • The wind farm will be composed of 21 floating horizontal axis wind turbines with a power of 12 MW.

  • The project is estimated to create approximately 1,000 regional jobs during the construction phase.

Innovation

  • The floating wind turbine technology utilizes a floating platform as a support structure, allowing the wind farm to be built far from the coast to avoid interference with the landscape, fishing, and other coastal activities.

  • The project benefits from technological and logistic synergies with the other offshore wind initiatives managed within the same partnership and from the broad technical and operational capability of the project partners.

Environmental impact

  • The wind farm will be placed more than 35 km from the coast of Sicily, outside critical areas identified in the analyses. At this distance, the turbines will not impact the view from land.

  • In-depth analyses conducted in the preliminary environmental study determined the optimal positioning of the proposed park.

  • The design considered various constraints, including environmental, military, maritime, air, and fishing-related factors.

  • The foundation technology allows the wind farm to be positioned in marine areas with depths between 200 and 350 meters, making environmental impacts negligible.

  • Furthermore, the positioning was selected to exclude protected areas and areas of natural value, such as the outcropping banks in the Sicilian Channel (e.g., Banco di Talbot, Banco Avventura). These ecosystems are rich in biodiversity and of great importance for species conservation and fishing.

Energy Security and Decarbonization Contribution

  • The 7Seas Med project has a capacity of 252 MW, with a yearly production of around 800 GWh of renewable energy.

  • This will satisfy the electricity consumption of approximately 300,000 households, contributing to the decarbonization objectives of the 2030 National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan.

  • The total CO2 prevented will be 350,000 tons for every year the project operates.
