Milan (Italy), March 5, 2025 – Saipem and Divento, a partnership between Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP, through the “flagship” fund Copenhagen Infrastructure V), GreenIT, a joint venture between Plenitude (a Company controlled by Eni) and CDP Equity (CDP Group), 7 Seas Wind Power and NiceTechnology, have signed a collaboration agreement involving the application of STAR 1, Saipem’s proprietary technology for floating wind, in favour of the 7 Seas Med projects in Sicily and Ichnusa Wind Power in Sardinia, with the aim of supporting their participation to the firsts auctions provided for the Fer2 Decree (“aste Fer2”).
Saipem was selected after a competitive technical-economic feasibility procedure.
STAR 1 is a technology developed for the making of semi-submersible floating wind foundations, born from Saipem’s decades of experience in the design, construction and installation of subsea infrastructures, able to offer a light industrial solution, easy to build, assemble and maintain.
The 7 Seas Med floating wind project, located in the Strait of Sicily over 35 km from the coast, with a capacity of 252 MW and a yearly production of about 800 GWh, is the first of its kind in Italy to receive the environmental compatibility decree from the Ministry of Environment and Energy Security.
Ichnusa Wind Power is a project that will be developed by the namesake company about 40 km from the south-western coast of Sardinia, with a capacity of 504 MW and a yearly production of about 1.6 TWh of renewable energy.
Both initiatives are in the development phase and awaiting the completion of the definition of the regulatory framework for the first auctions for Italian innovative renewables technologies, among which floating offshore wind.
The collaboration agreement between Saipem and Divento brings together two strong entities, their respective skills and long-term strategic approach, aimed at the implementation of all project phases. It represents a successful example of excellence in Italian engineering and cooperation between Italian and Northern European investors, aimed at creating value for offshore floating wind sector. A technology which is potentially scalable on large volumes in Italy, representing at the same time a challenge and a unique opportunity for the domestic energy market and for the national production chain.

We are excited to announce the launch of the “Offshore Wind Energy Training Path,” a series of seminars to be held over three days, developed in collaboration with the University of Cagliari, the Embassy of Denmark and the offshore wind industry. This initiative is designed to prepare students for careers in the growing offshore wind energy industry.

Online Webinar: The program will be introduced with a webinar on December 5, 2024, during which professors from the University of Cagliari will present the training plan and answer questions from participants.
Seminar Start: The seminar will officially start in January 2025 in Cagliari, Italy, with modules addressing the technical, economic and environmental aspects of offshore wind energy. This seminar series will last 3 days and is limited to 50 students
Registration: Registration will open on December 5, 2024. Interested parties are invited to attend the webinar to find out all the details of the program.

The Ichnusa Wind Power project announces successful redeployment of Floating Light Detection and Ranging “FLiDAR” for the Ichnusa floating offshore wind development off the coast of PortoScuso, Sardinia. The redeployment was carried out with the support of Akrocean by the Anteos Vessel on the 5th of September. The measurement equipment will provide additional high-precision wind data, crucial for accurately quantifying the potential of offshore wind energy and data to inform the final design of the offshore wind farm.
The LiDAR system, positioned in the Ichnusa project area approximately 45km from the coastline, will passively monitor the atmosphere and collect vital data on wind speed, direction, atmospheric and ocean conditions.
The floating LiDAR will operate for one year and is a continuation of the projects commitment to the development of sustainable energy in Sardinia. It will enhance the understanding of wind patterns in the Mediterranean Sea relating to energy generation resources, contributing to future wind farm projects and boosting clean energy production for the island and beyond.
The Ichnusa project is part of the Divento Energia consortium, which is leading the development of floating offshore wind in Italy with a pipeline of approximately 3GW in Italian waters.
